October is a very special month for our Heritage project as it is Black History month.  This month we visited both sites of the Tennison road primary school along with Dallow primary school where we were able to deliver workshops on not only heritage but on Mary Seacole and who she was!

We started off with the children drawing their handprint representing their own identity and they then wrote their names and what their heritage was.  Along with this, they wrote something they enjoyed about their heritage such as their favourite food, music or even fashion from their culture.

We then learned some information about Mary Seacole and played the documentaries introductory poem to assist us with our next activity, which was for the class to write their own class poem about Mary Seacole. 

Each class had such an individual approach and style to their poetry while still being able to include key information about Mary Seacole and her contribution to not only Black History but British and Jamaican history.   We showed the class our new Mary Seacole Roller Banner where Mary Seacole comes to life and speaks about her experience as a Nurse.

In addition to this, our new QR code has been displayed alongside our Mary Seacole painting on the side of the Mary Seacole Housing Association Head office. It literally brings Mary Seacole to life on the side of the building and she speaks to you!  This enables members of the public to gain additional knowledge about Mary Seacole using an interactive approach.  This can be found on Cardiff Grove.
